In 1983, Soviet virologist Dr Mikhail Balayan helped reveal hepatitis E to the world through an extraordinary act of scientific self-experimentation. After ingesting material from patients with unexplained hepatitis, Balayan developed the disease and subsequently visualised the virus using electron microscopy.
Beyond Balayan honours those remarkable beginnings while looking forward to what remains undiscovered about HEV, wherever in the world it may be hiding.

Hepatitis E Virus International Direct Action Group
Research without borders.
HEViDrAG is an international group dedicated to identifying, understanding and responding to acute HEV outbreaks through research, collaboration and direct action.
ONE VIRUS. CONNECTED WORLDS.
Understanding hepatitis E requires looking beyond the individual patient. Depending on genotype and setting, HEV transmission can involve contaminated water, human-to-human faecal-oral pathways, animal reservoirs, food and environmental sources.
